Edible Dosing Guide: Milligrams per Package vs. per Dose
Edibles are one of the most popular ways our patients at Treehouse Pharmacy in Ponca City use medical marijuana. They're discreet, there's no smoke, and the effects last longer than most other options. They're also the product we get the most questions about, and for good reason: the numbers on an edible package can be confusing, and it's easy to take more than you meant to.
This guide explains the two numbers that matter, milligrams per package and milligrams per dose, why a THC percentage on an edible doesn't tell you much, and how to use our online menu to find a dose that fits you.
The Two Numbers That Matter
Edibles are measured in milligrams (mg) of THC. Every package tells you two things:
- mg per package: the total THC in everything in the box, bag or bar. A "100 mg" pack of gummies has 100 mg of THC across all of the gummies together.
- mg per dose (also called per serving): how much THC is in one piece. If that 100 mg pack holds 10 gummies, each gummy is 10 mg.
The math is simple: mg per package ÷ number of servings = mg per dose.
- A 100 mg pack with 10 gummies is 10 mg per gummy.
- A 100 mg chocolate bar with 10 squares is 10 mg per square.
- A 1,000 mg pack with 20 gummies is 50 mg per gummy.
- A 100 mg "single" gummy or cookie is 100 mg in one piece, so you'd cut it into smaller pieces.
Watch for high-dose packs. Oklahoma allows much stronger edibles than many states, and packages of 1,000 mg or more are common. A single piece from one of them can be many times a normal starting dose, so always check the per-dose number before you eat anything.
Why THC Percentage Is Misleading on Edibles
With flower, the THC percentage is useful: it tells you how strong the bud is. On an edible, the percentage is THC as a share of the product's total weight. So it depends on how big and heavy the edible is, not just on how strong it is.
Here's a real example from our own shelves. Two edibles that each contain 100 mg of THC tested at about 1% THC and about 10% THC. It's the same dose with ten times the percentage, simply because one edible weighs about ten times as much as the other. That's why our menu lists edibles in milligrams instead of percent.
How Much Should You Start With?
Everyone responds to THC differently. Body weight, metabolism, what you've eaten, other medications and your tolerance all make a difference. Some common guidelines:
- New to edibles: many people start with 2.5 to 5 mg.
- Some experience: 5 to 10 mg is a common dose.
- Experienced patients: may use 10 to 25 mg or more, but only after working up to it.
If your edible is 10 mg per piece and you're just starting out, half a piece or even a quarter is a sensible first try. Your Treehouse budtender can point you to products that are easy to split.
This guide is general information, not medical advice. If you take other medications or have health concerns, talk with your doctor about what's right for you.
Start Low, Go Slow
Edibles work differently from smoking or vaping. The THC has to pass through your digestive system first, so:
- Effects usually begin 30 minutes to 2 hours after eating, and can take longer on a full stomach.
- Effects often last 6 hours or more.
- Wait at least 2 hours before taking more. The most common mistake is taking a second dose because the first one "isn't working yet."
Some products, often labeled "nano" or "fast-acting," are made to kick in sooner. They're still edibles, so the same rule applies: start with a small dose and give it time.
If You Take Too Much
Taking more than you meant to can be uncomfortable, but the feeling passes. Find a calm, comfortable place, drink some water, have a snack and rest. Don't drive. If your symptoms are severe or you're worried, get medical help.
Find Your Dose on Our Live Menu
Our online edibles menu is updated through the day and built around milligrams:
- Every edible card shows the total, like "100 mg per package." Where we have the serving count, it shows the dose too, like "100 mg per package · 10 mg per dose (10 servings)."
- Filter by Per package to see edibles by total strength, from up to 100 mg all the way to 10,000 mg.
- Filter by Per dose to see edibles by strength per piece: up to 5 mg, 5–10 mg, 10–25 mg, 25–50 mg and over 50 mg.
Don't see a per-dose number on a product? Check the package label, or just ask us. We're happy to do the math with you.
Safety Tips for Edibles
- Keep edibles locked up and out of reach of children and pets. Many look just like regular candy or snacks.
- If a child eats an edible, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222, or 911 in an emergency. If a pet eats one, call your vet.
- Don't drive or operate machinery after taking an edible.
- Avoid mixing edibles with alcohol, which can make the effects stronger and less predictable.
- Store edibles in a cool, dry place in their original, labeled packaging.
